The Savaia village is located on the south-west coast of the island of Upolu, about 30 miles from Samoa’s capital Apia. The village has a population of about 600 people, 55 of whom are matais or chiefs. Read More....
Savaia hosted the Commission of Enquiry for Matais this week. It seeks to find ways to stop the abuse of matai bestowment. This can be seen with families with multiple "SAO" matais, as well as bestowment of matai titles to guests as gifts. The ultimate goal is to make life easier for the Samoan people and restore the prestige of the 'matai'.
